Mobulas & Mega Fauna Safari

They're rays of the Sea of Cortez, close relatives of manta rays, that gather by the thousands off La Ventana. They launch clear of the surface and land flat with a sharp crack; the leading theories are communication, shaking off parasites, or courtship. Nobody has settled it, and watching it never gets old.

The big aggregations happen from late spring into summer. The 2026 season for this expedition ran June 15 to July 19. If it has already passed, leave us your email on the waitlist and we'll write as soon as new dates are out.

You can, snorkeling off the boat — no tanks or certification needed. And no, they don't sting: mobulas have no barb and feed on plankton. What matters is entering the water calmly and never chasing them, which is how the school stays together around you.

Beyond the mobulas, the trip goes looking for megafauna: pilot whales, dolphins and sea lions, with snorkel stops on reefs and a landing on Isla Cerralvo for a meal on the beach. Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the aquarium of the world; in summer you see why.

It's a coastal town just over an hour from La Paz, Baja California Sur, facing Isla Cerralvo. You fly into La Paz and we take it from there — round-trip transport from the meeting point is included.

Spacious The North Face tents with a cot and sleeping pad inside, set between the sea and the mountains. This is an expedition camp: more rugged than our Magdalena Bay camps, with every meal handled by the camp kitchen.

Moderate. Two full days on the water with several snorkeling entries. No previous experience required, but you should swim confidently in open water.

No. Flights are on you, and you fly into La Paz, Baja California Sur. Book your arrival before the day-1 meeting time and your return after the trip ends on day 4 — if your flight leaves early, plan an extra night in La Paz.

Four days, three nights. It includes round-trip transport from the meeting point in La Paz, every meal of the trip, the marine safaris and guided activities, accommodation in a The North Face tent, certified local staff, and accident insurance.

Yes. Booking more than 60 days out, you can split it into two payments: a first one that holds your spot and the balance before departure. Inside 60 days, the full amount is due at booking.

Yes. After booking you fill out a form with allergies and restrictions, and the camp kitchen builds your menu around them. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free: handled on site, not with a backup granola bar.
