The Sardine Run in Mexico: a marine spectacle that lasts a few weeks a year.
The Adventure Society X Akampa
Every year, from October to December, the waters off Baja California Sur fill with enormous schools of sardines during their great migration. There, striped marlins, dolphins, and sea lions gather to hunt this natural feast. On this tour, you’ll snorkel right in the heart of Mexico’s Sardine Run, accompanied by a certified marine biologist, and experience a marine spectacle that occurs only a few weeks a year. The camp sits right on the coast, between dunes and mountains, with views of the giant bait balls — and the chance to swim among them. Adventure, conservation and comfort, the Akampa way.

The trip starts in Loreto, BCS. Our transport picks you up at the meeting point and we drive to Magdalena Bay together, then on to the camp, where a warm welcome and a fresh meal from the kitchen are waiting. After settling in, we gather around the fire and our biologist walks us through everything worth knowing about gray whales.
We're up early for sunrise, coffee and breakfast, then out on our first Ocean Safari — several hours at sea looking for bait balls of sardines, which draw striped marlin and sea lions. In the afternoon, lunch is fresh ceviche served in the dunes. Back at camp: sunset, dinner, and slow time around the fire.
We head out early for a second Ocean Safari with the marlin and humpback whales, so you leave with nothing left on the list. Then we visit a community-run oyster farm to see how they're grown — and sit down to oysters and fresh seafood minutes out of the water. Back at camp for sunset, and one more fire under a sky with no city near it.
On the last day, we have one more breakfast to say goodbye to Magdalena Bay, pack up, and drive back to Loreto.
