The winter sanctuary of humpback whales.

Ballena Jorobada

Every winter, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometers to the warm waters of Magdalena Bay to mate and give birth. From our luxury camp, you’ll set out on Ocean Safaris to seek them out: mothers with calves, singing males, breaches that shake the sea—with a marine biologist who interprets every behavior. Between safaris, the camp is your sanctuary: luxury tents nestled among the dunes, fresh food, and campfires under a sky free of city lights.

  • The adventure begins in La Paz, Mexico. We’ll arrange transportation to take us to the agreed-upon departure point, and from there we’ll head to Bahía Magdalena. From there, we’ll travel to the camp, where we’ll be waiting for you with a smile and a delicious meal. On this first day, we’ll settle in at the camp and then gather around a campfire, where our biologist will tell us everything we need to know about the marine wildlife we’ll be looking for during the expedition.

  • We’ll get up early to watch an unforgettable sunrise, enjoy a cup of coffee and a delicious breakfast, and then head out on our first Ocean Safari. We’ll spend several hours at sea searching for marine life. In the afternoon, we’ll have ceviche in the dune area. When we return, we’ll enjoy the sunset, have dinner, and have time to relax and socialize around the campfire.

  • Early in the morning, we’ll go on our second Mexican Ocean Safari to see the humpback whales so you won’t miss a thing. Afterward, we’ll visit an incredible community-run oyster farm where we’ll learn about oyster farming and enjoy fresh seafood. We’ll return to camp in the afternoon to watch the sunset. In the evening, we’ll have a bonfire under the starry sky.

  • On our last day, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast to say goodbye to Bahía Magdalena. Then we packed our bags and headed to La Paz to begin our journey home.

It was an unforgettable experience with Akampa. The staff was exceptional—always attentive and genuinely caring about every detail. The food and service were outstanding. The tents deserve a special mention: incredibly comfortable beds and spacious setups that make desert camping feel effortless and luxurious. We also went out to sea and had the chance to see whales—an absolutely out-of-this-world experience. Everything you need is thoughtfully taken care of. I would highly recommend Bahía Magdalena Ocean Camp to anyone looking for a truly special adventure.

The camp was a very special experience. Although I didn’t get the chance to touch the whales, seeing them up close was truly moving. I would love to visit again.
